ERRARE HUMANUM EST
In the 1700s, a certain John Taylor (1703-1772), a British self-proclaimed ophthalmologist, was rampaging through the musical world. Travelling around Europe, self-promoting his talents as an ophthalmologist, John Taylor performed operations with catastrophic results. His strategy was to operate, let the patient rest for a few days with a blindfold, and then move to another city. His promotion was so successful (despite the butchery), that he was soon called to the court of King George II.
Posing as the doctor to the King of England and the Pope, this charlatan had no real expertise but was yet recommended to two composers.
Indeed, he attacked the eyes of two great composers : J.S. Bach and Haendel. His botched operations led to blindness for both of them !
It is even said that his operations could have cost Bach his life. A tragic end for these masters of music, blinded by the incompetence of a swindler.
History will remember John Taylor as the executioner of the great Baroque composers.
